Mankato Kayak Bass Fishing Tournament Winners

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the MNKFA Mankato Bass Classic kayak fishing tournament. It was a fun way to celebrate the sport, chat with fellow yakkers and take part in a friendly competition. Thanks to MNKFA board members for each of their efforts to make the event a huge success. Third place went to Rodney B. (right) Second place to Corey V.R. (left) And let’s all hail and congratulate the first place winner Les K. (center).

Tournament Recap: The 2015 Mankato Bass Classic

By Anthony Heimkes

June 20th 2015 was the official tournament day for the 2015 Mankato Bass Classic. We had 34 registered entrants from around the state of Minnesota and Iowa. The event unofficially began on June 19th with the Minnesota Kayak Fishing Association board members meeting at Lake Francis near Mankato, MN to do a little informal fishing. After a fun half day of catching some decent large mouth, the group headed to the tournament headquarters at Bray Park on Lake Madison. Camp was promptly set up with over a dozen MNKFA group members dedicating their weekend to our first destination tournament of the 2015 season.

The first night was a great evening of camaraderie, meeting new people, and telling fishing tales. The rain came through around midnight and didn’t taper off until early Saturday morning; however, you wouldn’t know it with the vast amounts of people that continuously streamed in Saturday morning. For the Mankato Classic entrants had the option of fishing three lakes around the Mankato area: Madison Lake (tourney headquarters), Duck Lake, and Ballantyne Lake. The tournament was based on total length of up to three bass, obviously catch, photo, and release. The captains meeting began promptly at 0630, shortly thereafter entrants headed to the lake of their choosing. The day was not an easy one to fish. The winds were high with constant blowing of 15 mph, with gusts much higher. This certainly didn’t deter our amazing fishermen. The initial results were a little low with numbers coming in the mid-20s; however, by the 4:00pm deadline we were all pleasantly surprised with numbers in the 40” range.

The final results were very impressive considering the challenging fishing conditions. Les took first at 48.75”, Corey took second with 48.5”, and Rodney took third at 48.” First place took home $500.00 and an amazing custom wood plaque, second place took home a wood plaque and a Bending Branches Angler Classic Plus paddle, and third place resulted in $75.00 and a wood plaque. This was a fantastic event, with little to no major issues. The board members worked overtime to ensure everything went smooth and people had a great time fishing and camping. Thanks to all our amazing members and congratulations to our winners.

Here’s the schedule for this event

The tournament headquarters and camping will be at Bray Park on Lake Madison. Here is a link to the park website to get directions and more information. Click here for Bray Park Website

Friday June 19, 2015

3:30pm:

If you are camping Friday and Saturday please arrive around 3:30pm to the Madison Lake campsite. Due North Outdoors would like to get some video of members setting up camp. Ron will be at the campsite and know what time the video crew will be there. Please hold off on setting up your tents so we can get some video of our group.

Friday meals. Bring your own food and beverages for Friday night.

Campfire video shoot. Just all of us hanging out and talking about kayak fishing!

Saturday June 20, 2015

6am: Get to the campsite and tournament headquarters at Madison Lake. Get to the lake by 6am and get your boat unloaded (if you’re fishing on Madison Lake (there are 2 other lakes you can fish if you like). You will need to sign a liability waiver form and get the official tournament control image that MUST appear in your entry photos.

Bring your own food and water for Saturday breakfast and lunch. MNKFA will provide a barbecue dinner for official entrants Saturday evening.

6:30am: Captains meeting. You MUST be in attendance! We’ll review rules and itinerary and get ready for the 7:30am start. The meeting will be over by 6:45am. You can follow an MNKFA board member to either of the other 2 lakes to fish if you like. Both lakes are close to Madison Lake. If you are fishing one of these lakes, you should have enough time to get there and get your boat rigged for the 7:30am start.

7:30am to 3:30pm: Go get the 3 biggest bass you can land and take photos with the control image showing. Photo any species fish you catch…in the event no bass are submitted, the single longest fish in length is the winner. You MUST be back to the judging station at Madison Lake and in line with your photos by 4:00 pm. No one will be allowed in line after 4:00pm. We suggest you get there early. Winner gets $500 cash via our PayPal account the week after the tournament. You can email entries while on the water to: mccandrmatt@gmail.com We are NOT responsible for any wireless or internet connection issues.

3:30 to 5:00 pm: Judges review photos and determine the winner, second place and third place. The judges for this tournament are 1. Ron Strauss. 2. Johnny Johnson. 3. Matt McCandless. All 3 will verify validity and length of submitted photos. Any questions regarding length will be voted on by the 3 judges with a 2 out 3 majority being the final say. Winners get prizes and round of applause.

5:00 to 7:pm: Chow down on a Barbecue MNKFA is providing for everyone that is officially entered in the tournament. We’ll be having brats, chips, salad and cookies. Soft drinks will be provided. After dinner we’re going to raffle off some prizes so be sure to stick around!. After that…probably loads of B.S.ing going on…you can bet on that! Many of us are camping Saturday night and fishing again on Sunday. We’ll all know where the fish are and what they’re biting on, HOW COOL IS THAT!

 Mankato Kayak Fishing Tournament Lakes

MNFKA is growing fast and getting exposure! Our board members have been working behind the scenes for you to build our association to be one of the BEST kayak fishing associations out there!

We’ve received GREAT news that involves more exposure! Board member Johnny Johnson has developed a relationship with Bill Sherck, co-host of Due North Outdoors and has made arrangements for them to join us June 19 – 20 , 2015 to film a kayak fishing show for both Due North Outdoors AND Minnesota Bound with Ron Schara!

I’m making a call out to ALL of you who are planning on fishing the Mankato Bass Classic to get signed up! Bill has expressed their desire to not only film some fishing from a kayak but to get the whole aspect of our kayak fishing community getting together…and this will involve them filming us setting up tents and campsites and filming all of us gathered around a campfire with ‘yaks nearby and talking kayak fishing shop talk! So if you want a chance to be on television on a GREAT show make sure you get signed up. The first people to sign up will have first call on the best camping spots we reserve for the event!

I’m super excited for this kind of exposure, it will get our name out there for all to see in our area and attract new members to join our awesome association! I Look forward to seeing ALL of you out there!

Schedule of events for the MNKFA Barbie Pole Classic Kayak Fishing Tournament 7/11/2015.

1. (Photo above) This is the Lake Auborn public access. This is where we will launch from (NOTE: not the Three Rivers Campground that is also on the lake). You must be there by 6:30am (earlier is better) to get your kayak ready, sign a waiver and be ready for the 7:30am captains meeting and the start of fishing.

2. (Photo above) This is Parley Lake. It is about 1 mile from Auborn. We will use this for back up parking if needed and our dinner / awards ceremony after fishing is done.

Schedule

6:30am to 7:30am: Boat prep and you MUST sign a waiver. You will be given your Barbie Pole. You may put new line on your Barbie Pole if you like. NO OTHER ROD AND REEL IS ALLOWED IN YOUR KAYAK!!! It will be a little tight for space at the access. We probably will need to share with power boats coming on and off the lake. Be patient and be courteous. Ron will be in his power boat. We probably will have an on-the-water Captains Meeting away from the launch. The control image will be given to each entrant at the Captains Meeting to ensure any fish caught prior to the meeting cannot be entered.

7:30am to 3:30pm:  Fishing. Catch, photo and release. Only artificial bait is allowed. Cumulative score of your largest Bass and largest Northern Pike. Person with the best total inches is WINNER! All photos must be emailed to Tony before 3:30pm or you must be back at the launch and in line ready to show Tony the photos on your phone or other device. All photos MUST adhere to our C.P.R. (Catch, Photo, Release) guidelines. Email photos to: anthonyheimkes@gmail.com

You must photo and submit your fish according to the MNKFA Measurement Rules!
See the rules.

3:30pm to 7:00pm: Load up your gear and get up to the Parley Lake picnic area. We will have sandwiches, chips and sodas. We’ll share stories and we’ll give out the awards.

2Gary-Engel-Barbie-Pole-Kayak-Tournament

Barbie Fishing PoleThe Minnesota Kayak Fishing Association is proud to present the 1st Annual Barbie Pole Classic. What is the Barbie Pole Classic you may ask, well it’s where a group of grown men and women grab a kayak and a pink, Barbie themed child’s rod and reel and attempt to land the biggest fish. Your $200.00 Shimano reel?….leave it at home, your St. Croix Legends Tournament Rod?….that stays in the truck. The only equipment that will be used is a two foot, hot pink, Barbie themed rod and reel. That’s right folks, we are holding a legitimate kayak fishing tournament with nothing but a single adolescent fishing pole. Check your ego at the door, for we’ll be slamming the bass Barbie style. Come one come all….this is an event not to be missed.

Here’s what you get for $20

Everyone who signs up will get their very own Barbie fishing pole to use. No other rod and reel is allowed in your kayak. The poles will be handed out to participants at the launch meeting (you cannot bring your own). You can ONLY use this rod and reel to fish with in this tournament. You may re-spool new line if you like.

You are allowed to use any artificial bait you like on the end of the Barbie Fishing Pole.

After fishing closes for the day we will have social hour and a barbecue for all entrants. This promises to be a whole lot of silly FUN!

To send fish photo entries via email: rnrs2255@gmail.com

Facebook: we cannot accept fish pic entries via facebook. Photos submitted this way tend to be compressed and lose detail.

NOTE: Entries will only be accepted from the FIRST 25 PEOPLE who have officially completed the online entry form AND completed the PayPal tournament entry payment by 07-09-2015 by 5:00pm central standard time (tournament can…and probably will fill up prior to this deadline)!

Tournament will be for Northern Pike and Bass (large mouth or small mouth). You combine your one largest fish of each species at the end of the day to get your score in cumulative inches. Get out there and get them and send in your pics! This tournament costs $20.

Winner gets a $50 gift certificate to Midwest Mountaineering.

It’s a 3 species tournament

The online tournament will feature Northern Pike, Walleye and Bass (both large and small mouth).  Values are awarded on an inch per point basis. If you catch and photograph a 16.25” large-mouth bass, you’d receive 16.25 points towards your total. All fish can be upgraded with a newer, larger fish…catch a 16.25” bass, post it, and replace that post with the 19.375” bass landed 2 hours or 2 days later. The same goes for Walleye and Northern Pike. By the end of the tournament, each angler can have posted many fish, with the largest in each species adding to their total length for the three allowable species.

2 Tournaments for one price!

The online tournament will run from 08/08/2015 12:01am to 08/29/2015 4:00 pm. Your fish must be caught and submitted in this time period. The online tournament results will determine who wins the Hobie Outback Kayak and other prizes on this page. REFUND OF ENTRY FEE IS NOT PERMITTED.

Bring your own food and refreshments for Friday, Saturday morning and lunch. Supper and soft drinks will be provided for Saturday evening 08/29/2015.

Saturday 6:00AM MANDATORY!: Meet at the Tournament Headquarters (Fishermans Wharf Resort) for the MANDATORY Captain’s meeting where we will go over all the rules, fill out any waivers not yet signed, and give you the control image. FAILURE TO BE AT THIS MEETING WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION!

**Saturday 07:00am: Shotgun launch from the shore of Fisherman’s Wharf Resort. WEATHER CONDITIONS: If the water conditions at this location are poor, we will give you free reign to launch from anywhere on Lake Mille Lacs, AFTER, you have attended the captains meeting.

Saturday 4:00pm: You MUST be physically back at the tournament headquarters. Turn in photos of your catch to Tony Heimkes if you could not or did not email your photos. Have a soft drink and chit-chat with fellow kayak anglers. Check out the raffle give aways. YOU MUST BE BACK BY THIS TIME. THIS IS MANDATORY. IF YOU ARE LATE, YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

Saturday 5:00pm to 6:00pm: We’ll have supper for you at the tournament headquarters. Bring your appetite and some B.S. to share with others!

Saturday 6:00pm to 6:15pm: We’ll honor the tournaments name sake, Chris Nelson. Some words from our Gold Sponsor, Debby Nelson of Hi Tempo Watersports.

Saturday 6:15pm to 7:00pm: We’ll announce the winners of the one day destination tournament. Then we’re going to give away thousands of dollars in raffle prizes as fast as we can. You’re going to have stuff to carry back to your campsite.

The rest of the weekend: You’re on your own. No formal plans. Find a new friend and go out fish with them!

2015 Rainy Lake Trip
Sep 17 @ 7:00 am – Sep 20 @ 11:00 pm

Rainy Lake Kayak Fishing TripRainy Lake, MN Northern PIke

Rainy Lake, MN BassMinnesota’s Rainy Lake is a premier fishery for many species

We’ll be camping in Voyaguer’s National Park. Rainy Lake borders Canada and is a top 100 smallmouth bass lake in the U.S.A. It’s known for a healthy population of Walleyes and the Pike can truly be monsters! We’re going to plan a trip that entails we get up early day 1. Get to the put-in, get to a our campsite…and get some late afternoon / evening fishing in. Days 2 and 3 are filled with fishing fun. Day 4 is cramming in some final fishing in the morning. Break camp, get the trucks packed and bomb it home.

MNKFA members Roger and Ron have been to the area many times. We’re going plan this out for our group. The photos on this page are from our trips up to Rainy Lake. Join us and fish this awesome fishery from your kayak! We will have one 18 foot power boat to fill with food and other items that the group will need. That boat can be packed with tents and other items.

This is the plan, see diagram below. Put in at “A” which is the Rainy Lake Visitor Center. Follow the pink line which takes us to “B”. Destination “B” is campsite R63 or Loon Bay on this map (opens in new window) http://www.recreation.gov/nrso/mn/voya/VOYA.pdf

It looks to be a 5 mile or less paddle. You can click on the map below to see a larger image of the route we plan to take (opens in a new browser window).

Rainy Lake Kayak Fishing Trip

Participants are responsible for having the proper MN fishing license and registration on their boats.

All participants will be required to sign a legal liability waiver prior to participating in this event.

Sign Up Is Limited To 18 People

If we fill campsite 1 with 18 people and there is enough interest,

2019 BIG PIKE Trip To Lake Of The Woods
May 2 @ 7:00 am – May 7 @ 5:00 pm

Todd 40" Pike Hobie Fishing Kayak

Actual dates will be determined by monitoring ice off conditions. Come for all of the time or pick the days that work for you. Last year some people fished Friday through Monday. Some fished Saturday and Sunday only. It’s up to you.

Want to land huge Northern Pike from your kayak?

Northern Pike season never closes on Lake of the Woods. The Pike move into the shallow bays to spawn soon after ice out. This is a huge opportunity to be surrounded by lots of large pike. Lake of the Woods is known for trophy class Northern Pike. Last year the biggest Pike caught by our group was a 40″ inch fish by Todd Kewatt, shown above. This trip is a great way to start off your kayak fishing season!

MN DNR info: Lake of the Woods is managed for a high-quality northern pike population, with a significant component of “trophy” northern pike over 40 inches long. The northern pike population continues to be one of high quality, with 19% of the adult population at least 35 inches long, and 5% of the adults 40 inches long, or longer.

We’ll be staying at Ken-Mar-Ke Resort. The resort is on Bostic Creek. It’s just south of Cyrus Resort shown on the image below. Last year, our group spent most of our time fishing at mouth of the creek or out in the bay. The bay is somewhat protected on 3 sides by land. That helps with any rough weather conditions.

Ask any questions or let us know you’re coming, email:

Here is the agenda for the 2019 Vibe Kayak Bass Tournament at Lake Sakatah

***Small details are subject to MNKFA change***

From Grant: Sakatah state park officer Dennis cleared us to use the boat ramp area for the captains meeting. Guys who are NOT launching in the park can come to the meeting and leave after, without buying a pass. (He called it a “courtesy pass”)

The guys who ARE staying still need to buy a day pass at the self pay box when they enter. Pay box is located at the main office when you enter. I believe it’s 5$ cash for the day.

He is also going to call the CO officers to let them know we are good to do this. (Make sure we’ve got our permit on hand) they will probably pop in for fun to see the take off.

He also said we have been one of the best groups to be there over the past few years. They always look forward to our arrival. himself and the staff can’t wait to see us. He wants to take some pictures of our group too.

Saturday 5/18/2019, 7:00AM MANDATORY!: Check in at Lake Sakatah State Park boat launch for the MANDATORY Captain’s meeting where we’ll go over all the rules, fill out and sign waivers, and give you the control image. FAILURE TO BE AT THIS MEETING WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION!

Saturday 8:00am: You can launch at any public launch on Lower Sakatah, Sakatah or Tetonka Lakes. You may NOT use any private access to the water for this tournament. ONLY public access that is available to all is allowed.

Saturday 3:00pm: You MUST be physically back at Bullheads tournament headquarters. Turn in photos of your catch to the tournament director if you could not or did not email your photos. Have a soft drink and chit-chat with fellow kayak anglers. Check out the prize give aways. YOU MUST BE BACK BY THIS TIME. THIS IS MANDATORY. IF YOU ARE LATE, YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

!!!SAFETY!!! Everyone is required to check back in with the tournament director at the end of fishing. You do not need to stay for the awards ceremony if you did NOT win a prize. We MUST know you are off the water safely. If you won a top prize, you MUST attend the awards ceremony to claim the prize. If you are not at the awards ceremony, your prize goes to the next highest finisher attending the awards ceremony.

Saturday 3:00pm to 3:30pm: Have a drink and chit-chat with other kayak anglers.

Saturday 3:30pm to 4:30pm: We’ll announce the winners of the tournament, then hand out early bird winner prizes, then give away lots of prizes as fast as we can.

The rest of the weekend: You’re on your own. No formal plans. Find a new friend and go out fish with them!

Lake Koronis Information From Josh E.

I’ve fished it quite a few times. There are nice populations of both largemouth and smallmouth bass. There is a nice variety of structure also: rock piles, reeds, lily pads, islands. At almost 3000 acres, there are plenty of areas for people to fish. There are 4 accesses on the lake, with 3 of them having adequate parking. The lake is part of the crow river. It is possible to get from Koronis up to Rice Lake through the river. Wind could cause a problem, but that can happen about anywhere.

The campground is nice and has RV sites, camping cabins, and tent sites.

The one downside is that it does have Starry Stonewart. This is an invasive weed that is found in only about a dozen lakes in MN. It creates a matt of vegetation that is hard to pedal through. It is being treated on the lake, and doesn’t affect too many fishing areas. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, I would just emphasize the point of everyone doing a thorough job of cleaning everything off of their boats when they are done fishing.

Kayak Fishing Lures

All entrants will get these lures!

Bigger and better for 2019

We’ve changed up the format and rules this year!

  • Five (5) members on each team, your team chooses team name and captain
  • We reserve the right to change the number of people on teams and add people to your team to allow more new members to participate in this event, it’s about FUN!
  • You can choose who is on your team (see caveat above)  (all team members MUST sign up and pay the tournament fee or your team is disqualified)
  • Online fishing is part 1, destination tournament is part 2

MNKFA can change the rules at any time for any reason to make the event better for all involved, entrants, tournament officials, sponsors and more.

Individual people who sign-up will be added to an existing team

You do NOT need to form or find a team. We will find a team for you to fish with if you sign-up as an individual. Main goal is having some fun for sure! Individuals, signup! You WILL get on a team. Even if we wind up with just these teams below and some individuals, the individuals will be added to existing teams. The number of fish used to score each team will be established by the final number of anglers on each team.
