Capture your thrilling kayak angling moments: the best camera mounts for kayak fishing

Get ready to capture the ultimate angling moments with the best camera mounts designed specifically for kayak fishing. Taking kayak fishing pics and videos and sharing them is a ton of fun and a great way to relive unforgettable fishing memories in the off season. That’s why I’ve curated a list of top-notch camera mounts that will ensure you never miss a shot.

I own 3 action cameras. A Midland XTC400, a Go Pro 3 and a Go Pro 11. There’s various upsides and downsides to each camera, but that’s another story. The nice thing is that all the camera mounts I’ve purchased over the last 7 years I can get to work with any of these cameras. I’ve got 4 different camera mounts and that’s what this article is about, camera mounts.

There a two considerations to start with when choosing a camera mount. The first is, at the bottom, how does it mount to my kayak? The second is, at the top, how will it mount to my camera.

  1. Mounting to your Kayak. Most kayaks come with some sort of track mounting system built-in. That’s one way to attach your camera mount to your kayak. Other systems for mounting to your kayak include Hobie H-Rail, Scotty Mounts or RailBlaza Star Ports.
  2. Mounting your camera to the mount at the top. GoPro designed it’s own system years ago and still uses it today. You can get adaptors to use other types of mounts like RAM balls.

Types of camera mounts for kayak fishing

When it comes to camera mounts for kayak fishing, there are several options to choose from. Each type of mount offers its own advantages and features, allowing you to select the one that best suits your needs and preferences.

Kayak Fishing Clamp Camera Mount

Clamp Mounts: Clamp mounts are a popular choice among kayak anglers due to their versatility and ease of use. These mounts usually feature a sturdy clamp that can be attached to various parts of your kayak, such as the gunwale or a rail. With a clamp mount, you can secure your camera at the desired angle and capture stunning footage without any hassle.

Go Pro Suction Camera Mount
Suction Cup Mounts: Suction cup mounts are another excellent option for kayak fishing enthusiasts. These mounts utilize powerful suction cups that adhere to smooth surfaces, providing a secure and stable base for your camera. Suction cup mounts are known for their ability to offer a wide range of shooting angles, allowing you to capture unique perspectives of your fishing adventures. Add a tether or strap in case the mount comes loose.
Track Mounted GoPro Camera

Track Mounts: Track mounts are designed to be compatible with kayak track systems, which are often found on fishing kayaks. These mounts can be easily attached and adjusted along the track, providing flexibility in positioning your camera. With a track mount, you can effortlessly capture footage from different angles and vantage points, enhancing the overall visual appeal of your fishing videos.

The photo shows how I mount my GoPro most of the time. It is a RAM flexible Pipe with a ball and socket connector at the top and track mount at the bottom. You can see a short video of this point of view here: https://youtu.be/D3VOlvCsgE0?si=-emS8I5fiREEMM2q

Benefits of using camera mounts for kayak fishing

Hands-Free Operation: If you’re hand holding your cell phone to take a pic, your other hand is trying to control a slippery, angry fish. One of the greatest advantages of using a camera mount is the ability to go hands-free while capturing footage. With your camera securely mounted, you can focus on maneuvering your kayak and reeling in your catch, knowing that your camera is capturing all the action and ready for the hero shot at the end.

Stability and Security: Camera mounts are specifically designed to keep your camera stable and secure, even in challenging conditions. Whether you’re paddling through rough waters or encountering strong currents, your camera mount will ensure that your camera stays in place, allowing you to capture clear and steady footage.

Versatility in Angles and Perspectives: Different camera mounts offer a variety of shooting angles and perspectives, allowing you to get creative with your footage. Whether you want to capture a wide-angle view of the surrounding scenery, zoom in on your fishing rod, or record a close-up of your catch, a camera mount will enable you to achieve the desired shot effortlessly.

Waterproof Housings: If you plan to use your camera mount in saltwater or rainy conditions, investing in a waterproof housing is essential. Waterproof housings protect your camera from water damage, allowing you to film worry-free in challenging environments.

Features to consider when choosing a camera mount for kayak fishing

1. Compatibility: Ensure that the camera mount you choose is compatible with your kayak model and camera. Consider the mounting options available on your kayak and the type of camera you plan to use, whether it’s a GoPro or a different brand. Compatibility is crucial to ensure a secure and stable attachment.

2. Adjustability: Look for a camera mount that offers a wide range of adjustability, allowing you to position your camera at different angles and heights. This will enable you to capture various perspectives and create visually captivating footage.

3. Durability: Kayak fishing can expose your camera mount to harsh conditions, including saltwater, UV rays, and rough handling. Therefore, opt for a mount that is made from durable materials, such as stainless steel or high-quality plastic, which can withstand the rigors of kayak fishing.

4. Ease of Installation: Choose a camera mount that is easy to install and set up on your kayak. The last thing you want is to spend valuable fishing time struggling with a complicated mounting system. Look for mounts that come with clear instructions and require minimal tools for installation.

Tips for capturing the perfect angling moment with a camera mount

Now that you have your camera mount set up on your kayak, it’s time to make the most of it and capture stunning footage of your angling adventures. Here are some valuable tips to help you capture the perfect angling moment:

Experiment with different camera angles and perspectives. Try mounting your camera at various heights and positions to capture unique shots that showcase the beauty of your fishing environment.

Utilize the wide-angle capabilities of your camera to capture the entire scene. Wide-angle shots can provide a more immersive experience and showcase the vastness of the water and the surrounding landscape.

Consider using accessories such as filters or lens attachments to enhance the quality and creativity of your footage. Neutral density filters can help reduce glare and balance the exposure, while fisheye lenses can add a unique visual effect to your shots.

Be mindful of your camera’s settings, such as resolution and frame rate. Depending on the action and lighting conditions, adjusting these settings can help you capture smoother footage or slow-motion sequences.

Accessories and add-ons for camera mounts for kayak fishing

Floatation Devices: Consider attaching a floatation device to your camera or camera mount to prevent accidental loss in case it falls into the water. Floatation devices provide an extra layer of protection and peace of mind.

Extension Arms: Extension arms can be attached to your camera mount to extend the reach and adjustability of your camera. These arms allow you to position your camera further away or at different angles, providing more flexibility in capturing your shots.

Waterproof Housings: If you plan to use your camera mount in saltwater or rainy conditions, investing in a waterproof housing is essential. Waterproof housings protect your camera from water damage, allowing you to film worry-free in challenging environments.

This pic of me with a bass was taken with a Go Pro 11, mounted on a RAM flexible arm on the front of my kayak, connected to my gear trac. It’s actually a frame grab from a video. When I first landed the fish, my back was to the sun, so I took my time and maneuvered my kayak so I was facing into the sun.

I encourage you to experiment with different angles, perspectives, and camera settings to capture unique and visually captivating footage. Capture and preserve your thrilling moments of kayak fishing and share your experiences with fellow anglers – it’s a ton of fun!
