Minnesota Kayak Fishing Calendar Tips
For Minnesota kayak anglers, the season is really a progression: prep → cold-water bass → spawn → vegetation → summer patterns → fall feed → cold-water fishing → winter planning. These tips will help you stay ahead and prepared and ready to take advantage of the season.
January — Plan, Learn & Upgrade
Most lakes are locked up. This is a good time to organize tackle, maintain reels, upgrade electronics, rig the kayak and research new water. Build a hit list of Minnesota lakes you want to explore once open water returns.
The image above is what I outlined for my kayak upgrades in winter 2026. You don’t need to go this extent as far as diagraming, I did it because it’s what I do and I had time to kill. Just a list to research and notes is fine. Ask questions in the MNKFA group for sure. Use the knowledge of the group to help you with answers to any questions.

February — Get Ready For Open Water
If you’ve decided it’s time to upgrade some things, get your gear purchased so you have plenty of time to get it installed. Start checking the kayak, trailer, pedal drive, batteries, PFD, rods and electronics. This is also a great month to study maps and identify shallow spawning areas, protected bays, points and early-season structure.

March — The Search For Open Water!
Some Minnesota Kayak Anglers will keep an eye on the states south of us to make a trip to an area where waters have melted. In Minnesota, southern rivers and lakes may provide the first kayak fishing opportunities. Watch MNKFA social media for reports on early season conditions.
Bass pattern: Cold-water / pre-spawn
Try: Jerkbaits, hair jigs, Ned rigs, finesse plastics
Key: Find the warmest available water.

April — The Kayak Fishing Season Comes Alive
April can produce some fantastic fishing because kayaks can quietly reach shallow areas before heavy recreational boat traffic arrives. Look for warming bays, dark-bottom areas, emerging vegetation, rock and wood. Cold water makes an unexpected swim particularly dangerous, understand when hypothermia conditions exist and always wear your PFD.
Bass: Pre-spawn pattern. Cold water techniques probably still appropriate.
Pike: They spawn close to ice out. Fish shallow areas with reed stems or other structure that can hold eggs.
Crappies: Moving toward shallow warming areas.
Best conditions: Sunny afternoons after several warming days. The fish will become more active as the water warms.
April MN Kayak Fishing Events
- Catch and release bass fishing is open year round in Minnesota as of 2026

The Lake Of The Woods Big Pike Adventure is the end of April, early May depending on ice out.
May — PRIME TIME
This is one of Minnesota’s most exciting kayak-fishing months. The general Minnesota fishing opener is early May (check the MN DNR website for exact details), before then, bass fishing is catch-and-release starting in 2026.
Bass transition from pre-spawn into spawning and post-spawn patterns depending on latitude and water temperature.
Target: Bass, pike, walleye, crappie
Bass locations: Flats, emerging weeds, docks, wood and spawning areas
Try: Jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, swim jigs, Ned rigs, wacky rigs

June — Possibly Minnesota’s Best Kayak Month
Long days + active fish + developing vegetation = ridiculously good kayak fishing. Bass increasingly relate to weeds, docks, bluegill areas and emerging offshore structure. Topwater fishing can become outstanding.
Minnesota’s muskie opener is usually in June, check the MN DNR regulations.
Try: Frogs, walking baits, buzzbaits, swim jigs, Texas rigs.
Kayak advantage: Get into vegetation and shallow areas bigger boats avoid.

July — Summer Patterns
Vegetation is established and bass begin settling into predictable summer locations. Early mornings can be made for topwater. As the sun climbs, move toward shade, docks, thick weeds, weed edges and deeper structure. On extreme heat days, consider fishing early, handling fish quickly or skipping the hottest period altogether.
Morning: Topwater
Midday: Vegetation, docks & deeper structure
Evening: Topwater again

August — Go Where the Fish Are
August rewards anglers who can adapt. Some fish bury themselves in vegetation while others move offshore. This is where good electronics can make a huge difference. The bass that move offshore can be at different depths. Being able to determine the depth the bass are holding in deeper water will help you determine what depth to target or what depth you need a crankbait to run.
Target: Deep weedlines, points, humps, offshore structure and heavy vegetation
Try: Drop shots, football jigs, Texas rigs, deep cranks, frogs
Bonus: Rivers can provide excellent late-summer kayak fishing.

September — Don’t Put the Kayak Away!
September may be the most underrated month of the entire Minnesota kayak fishing season. Cooling water starts changing fish behavior, recreational boat traffic decreases, hunters stop fishing to concentrate on time in the field and bass begin transitioning toward fall feeding patterns. It’s a great month to enjoy moderate weather and lakes that are not as pressured as they were earlier in the season. It’s my favorite time to be kayak fishing!
Target: Green weeds, baitfish, points, rock and remaining healthy vegetation
Try: Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, crankbaits, swimbaits, topwater

October — Big Fish Time
For serious kayak anglers, October can be special. Cooling water often concentrates fish and triggers aggressive feeding. Smallmouth fishing can be particularly good. Big fish will be bulking up to survive the long winter months below ice.
The tradeoff is safety: cold water, wind and rapidly changing Minnesota weather deserve respect. Know the weather and don’t take uncecesary chances.
Target: Rock, points, remaining green weeds and baitfish
Try: Jerkbaits, swimbaits, jigs, blade baits, Ned rigs
Strategy: Slow down as water temperatures fall.
November — One Last Cast? Hardcore Season.
This is bonus MN kayak fishing. Some years provide several fishable weeks; others shut down quickly. Muskie season on Minnesota inland waters usually closes in November. Check current regulations. ***USE CAUTION***, at typical Minnesota November temperatures the chance of hypothermia needs to be considered.
Bass: Cold-water locations
Try: Jerkbaits, blade baits, hair jigs, finesse plastics
Priority: Cold-water gear and conservative weather decisions
December — Start Planning For Next Year
Clean the kayak, remove electronics, maintain the pedal drive, charge/store batteries properly, repair tackle and start planning next year’s adventures.
