Essential gear and equipment for success in the league

To excel in a Kayak Bass Fishing League, it helps to have the right gear and equipment. In this section, we’ll guide you through the must-have items that will give you an edge over the competition.

Fish measurement and pics. MNKFA tournaments are CPR (Catch, Photo, Release). You take a pic of your fish on an approved measuring device that meets all current pic requirements and upload the pic to an online standings app. Learn more about MNKFA measuring requirements.

Get the right kayak for tournament fishing. From stability and maneuverability to propulsion, picking a tournament ready fishing kayak is a personal decision based on your style of fishing and preferences. I strongly suggest you visit local fishing kayak dealers and try the models you’re interested in on the water.

The best fishing rods, reels, fish finders for bass league kayak anglers. The short answer is the one that works on the water you’re on. The longer answer is more complex. Learning new techniques for bass fishing is a never ending pursuit, it’s part of the fun. Most people start with basic tried and true techniques like a whacky rigged worm or texas rig. These techniques can work on most waters, most times of the year. In addition to these presentations, I like to fish top water techniques like whopper ploppers or frogs. Even within these 4 techniques mentioned, there are many styles, sizes, colors and features available. Most people match the color of their presentation to water clarity or cloud cover conditions.

The rods and reels you use should be optimized for the technique. Rods come in different lengths and actions. Many rod manufacturers match action and length to specific techniques for you. Also consider what reel will work best for the technique your using. Reels that bring in more line faster are better for techniques where slack line needs to be tightened up to keep a fish hooked.

Safety equipment and proper attire for tournament fishing. Invest in a quality life jacket also called a pfd, (personal flotation device). Things can happen fast on the water, a pfd is a must to protect yourself if you tip and go into the water. Sun, rain and wind can effect your performance in tournaments. Clothing that provides protection from the elements will prevent dehydration, being cold and fatigue that can cut your fishing time short or zap the energy you need to stay focused on fishing.
